Simpler Recycling: All you need to know
In the UK alone, approximately 9.52 million tonnes are wasted every year (Waste Management, 2024). This figure spans all major stages of the food chain – from production and processing to retail and households. 67% of this waste could have been used if the proper precautions were in place.
In line with these figures, a new food waste legislation is being put into place, named Simpler Recycling. Due to come into effect on 31st March 2025, any business with more than 10 employees that produces more than 5 kilograms of food waste per week must comply. Businesses with less than 10 employees and households have been granted an extension to comply with these requirements.
Simpler Recycling will require a few changes to the workplace, including an understanding from staff of proper waste segregation techniques. Alongside this, an investment into food waste bins and collections may need to be taken. And existing waste management may need to be reviewed to ensure compliance. To offset these costs, care homes can adopt strategies to minimise food waste, such as portion sizing, better meal planning and monitor waste and improve inventory management.
